Unconventionality: Incorporating the Unexpected into Your Beadwork Designs

Dive into the realm of unconventionality in this three−day workshop that explores the conceptual and technical aspects of incorporating unexpected and unusual materials into elaborate beaded jewelry or sculpture. Topics covered in this workshop will include: approaches to patterning and design that maximize wearability, overall approach to creating effective and high impact designs, and successful incorporation of unconventional materials both technically and aesthetically. The instructor will assist students in their own design layouts as well as provide extensive instruction and demonstration of stitches and technical construction. Stitches covered will include peyote stitch (in all it various forms), Ndebele herringbone (in all its various forms), spiral stitch, multiple bezeling techniques, and many types of embellishment. Considerable amounts of time will be dedicated to constructing 3−dimensional forms that will effective capture the unusual objects upon which the project is based. The artist will discuss the ideas behind her own design agendas, as well as help students to develop and understand their own design intents. Students are encourage to bring in their own unique elements however the instructor will also provide a wide range of objects, available for purchase, that can serve as inspiration and provide focal points for design. Included amongst these objects will be: antique prosthetic eyes, doll eyes, computer circuitry board, custom−cut lapidary forms, feathers, leather, and an extensive assortment of found objects. Students will be asked to pre−select 2–3 possible color palettes prior to the workshop, as these will allow for more time to focus on design layout and concept. Pre−requisites for the class: Students MUST have good foundation knowledge of peyote, spiral, and Ndebele herringbone stitches, basic bead embroidery, and basic embellishment.

Les Bijoux d'Eiffel Bracelet

Inspired by the form and structure of the Eiffel Tour, this bold bracelet design features beaded prong settings constructed using a combination of herringbone and peyote stitches. Each prong holds a suspended vintage Swarovski dentelle.

Georgian Jewels

This unique design is a modern interpretation of the elaborate jewels of the Georgian period (1780−1830). It features six vintage Swarovski dentelles, three of which are bezeled and three of which are prong set using a unique herringbone/peyote stitch combination to create very structural form.
